This calamity transpired when a containment pond at the Ajkai Timföldgyár alumina plant ruptured, unleashing approximately one million cubic meters of red mud— a byproduct of aluminum manufacturing—into the surrounding region.

Kolontár, Devecser, and Somlóvásárhely bore the brunt, experiencing extensive damage to properties and infrastructure.
